Cataracts
are still the leading cause of vision loss in adults over
the age of 55. Approximately 50% of Americans ages 65 to 74,
and about 70% of those ages 75 and over have cataracts. Although
cataracts usually develop as part of the aging process, they
can also result from eye injuries, certain diseases such as
diabetes, medications such as steroids, genetic inheritance
and frequent, unprotected exposure to UV rays.
A
cataract is the clouding of the lens of the eye. With the
formation of a cataract, activities like reading, bowling,
working at the computer or driving can be difficult. Once
a cataract has formed, the most effective way to restore vision
is to remove the cloudy cataract and replace it with a lens
implant. Fortunately, vision can be restored quickly allowing
the patient to return home within a few hours.
Cataract
surgery is one of the most frequently performed surgeries
in the U.S. today. Over the past several years, advances in
technology have made this procedure one of the safest and
most effective surgeries available. The latest technology
calls for the use of eye drops to numb the eye. No needles
are used, which promotes patient comfort and reduces anxiety.
Recovery time is also more rapid, allowing the patient to
see better and return to normal activities more quickly. This
specialized surgery also takes advantage of the eye’s
natural ability to heal itself. Once the cataract is removed
and the artificial lens is implanted, the eye tissue is closed
over the incision and sealed naturally—no stitches.
This natural seal is much stronger than stitches, reduces
patient discomfort and reduces the chances of complications.
Seidenberg
Protzko has gone a step further and is now performing cataract
and vision correction surgery using the revolutionary new
AcrySof ReSTOR replacement lens, a foldable intraocular lens implant using
breakthrough technology which allows patients to experience
the highest level of freedom from glasses ever achieved.
