What's an Ophthalmologist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (M.D.) or doctor of osteopathy (D.O.) who specializes in the medical and surgical care of the eye, visual system and associated structures. An ophthalmologist has completed four years of undergraduate college education, four years of medical school, one year of internship, and at least three years of medical and/or surgical training in the diagnosis, treatment and management of eye diseases and visual system abnormalities.

What's an Optometrist?

Doctors of Optometry (O.D.) are independent primary and secondary health care providers who specialize in the examination, diagnosis, treatment and management of diseases and disorders of the eye, visual system and associated structures, as well as the diagnosis of related systemic conditions. In accordance with state law, optometrists prescribe, fit and dispense ocular medications, glasses and contact lenses, providing total eye health and vision care for all ages.
